Electronics Disposal

Effective January 1, 2012, the State of Illinois passed a law that prohibits the disposal of electronic waste through refuse collection.  This law, the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act, bans the disposal of e-waste in landfills, to include the following:

  • Computers
  • Video game consoles
  • Computer monitors
  • Electronic mice
  • Printers
  • Scanners
  • Televisions
  • Digital converter boxes
  • Electronic keyboards
  • Cable receivers
  • Fax machines
  • Satellite receivers
  • Videocassette recorders
  • Digital video disc recorders
  • Portable digital music players
  • Small scale servers
  • Digital video disc players

Electronic items are accepted for recycling at the Compost Center, but cannot be placed in regular trash. Additionally, residents can schedule a curbside special collection on a regular garbage day for a minimum fee of $40.00.  The Sanitation Section requires one business day notice for special collections.  To schedule a curbside collection, call the Sanitation Automated Hotline at (847) 615-4264.
